Profile: John Muir (The West Coast)

Sequoia National Park - The General Grant tree

“Any fool can destroy trees.  They (the trees) cannot run away; and if they could, they would still be destroyed – chased and hunted down as long as fun or a dollar could be got out of their hides.”  – John Muir

I took an ecology class in school, and so I’d heard mention one or twice of this infamous fellow and his love for the great outdoors; however, traveling through the West Coast, it is hard to not become intimately familiar with his travels and his endeavors to protect the beauty and the wildness of the region.

To sum it up, he was a Scottish-American (and the movies we’ve seen imitating his voice sure do emphasize the Scottish) naturalist and preservationist who lived from 1838 to 1914.  He spent most of his life lobbying for the protection of several areas on the West Coast, including Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks.

Judging from his quotes that are found all along the coast, at National Parks and on highway historic plaques, he had a way with words.  Thanks to his vociferous and poetic nature, there still exists some of the most beautiful (and wild) sights we’ve seen throughout our travels!
