Sustainable Sightings

As two earth-conscious travelers, Chris and I were always on the lookout for sustainable findings along the roadside. We were happy to find lots along the way!

In Vermont, on the way to Burlington, we were excited to find a rest area whose waste was filtered through plants and recycled back into the toilet systems as graywater. Not only was it sustainable, but beautiful – with a greenhouse full of flowers as part of the “Living Machine” system that broke down and filtered biosolids.

In Burlington, we found a Member-owned (Co-op) Market, with 73% of all its products obtained locally within Vermont. It was big, beautiful and with a bulk bins section to die for!

In Toronto, we found a house with a small front yard (city-sized) that was completely full of tomato plants.. enough tomatoes to share with the whole neighborhood! And we were also happily surprised to learn that Toronto Waste Management does a “Compost Pickup” to reduce the amount of solid organic waste that sits in the landfill. Just stick a bin out front of your house once a week – a good solution in a city where most people don’t have gardens to use their own compost in!

(“Stop Driving” sign in Toronto)

All throughout the plains of Saskatchewan and Alberta, we were overjoyed to see wind turbines in the distance. Generally there seemed to be enough to power the little towns that surrounded them. Once we were even lucky enough to see a wind turbine being transported along the highway. Up-close and personal with a HUGE (literally and figuratively) part of the renewable energy movement.

Yay for sustainability! Now just to convert the Jetta into a veggie-oil powered vehicle!
